Job Description

This is a Full-Time (80 hours every two weeks) benefited and remote position. Must be local in San Diego or willing to relocate. The work schedule will include working one Saturday or Sunday per week and come onsite if needed.

The Coder I is responsible for correct and timely coding of all medical records utilizing appropriate systems. Codes procedures, diagnoses or conditions, working from the appropriate medical record. May provide instructions to lower level coders as needed. Converts diagnosis and procedure data from patient medical record to ICD-9-CM/ICD-10 or similar coding scheme. Completes reimbursement or data abstraction forms for submission to appropriate parties. Identifies and sequences the diagnoses and procedures following all medical necessity guidelines. Meets productivity and quality standards. Interacts with physicians and other staff to clarify documentation.

Required Education/Experience/Specialized Skills:

  • Good critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 

Required Certification/Registration:

  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Associate (CCA), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) from American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) from American Academy of Professional Coders.

Preferred Education/Experience/Specialized Skills/Certification:

  • Associates Degree in Health Information Technology.
  • 2+ years of related experience.
  • Epic experience.
  • Experience with PB coding.
  • RHIA certification.

Position Pay Range: $35.39-$51.41/hour

In compliance with the California Pay Transparency Act, Scripps Health posts the pay range for all jobs. Please note that actual pay will be determined based on relevant experience and internal equity within the pay range. Please also note this range is applicable for employees who reside in California only. A geographical pay differential may be applied for remote employees who reside out of state.
