SAMANTHA FIGLIA: Hello, Scripps employees. As part of Workforce Development Month, we are bringing you a three-part series on the Scripps Employee Career Search experience. Today is Part I, and we’re going to talk about what to consider before you submit and apply for a new role here at Scripps Health.
My name is Samantha Figlia, and I’ll be your host and guide through the next three parts of the miniseries. I’ve been with Scripps a little over 11 years, and I actually started in the Diet Office at Green Hospital in 2009. As you can see in the picture below, I’m with my foodservice colleagues, and I’ve grown my career and really passionate about the Scripps employee experience in my current role of Supervisor of Talent Acquisition. So, I am a subject matter expert in the recruitment process. So thanks for being here today. I’m excited to dive right in.
Before we talk about things to consider before submitting your application, I want to highlight our new career site that just went live this summer. It gives a fresh new look to job seekers and features all employee photos, which really enhance our brand and our culture to future job seekers, and it gives you, as an internal employee, an opportunity to see career progression stories of current employees and how they’ve gotten to their positions and grown their careers here at Scripps. I also want to point out the Talent Network. And the Talent Network is an opportunity for you to opt in for particular job alerts, if you’re looking for a particular position, but also gives you updates about our organization as another form of media other than the Scripps Connect but then also gives you an opportunity to share jobs and opportunities with friends and family.
All right. So what should you consider before applying and submitting your application to another Scripps role? With any job seeker process, it does start with updating your resume and profile in the Scripps Career Center. We find that a lot of internal employees don’t add their Scripps experience. Their profile and resume are all from when they first apply at Scripps.
So taking a moment to really reflect on your experience and highlighting what you’ve learned here at Scripps and the accomplishment that you’ve made in your current department is really impactful. So making sure you update and that you have all of your work history in your Scripps Career Center profile and an updated resume really helps to understand what you’re looking for and all of your experience. And then when you are looking for positions on our new website, it is important that you just take a moment to make sure that you meet all of the requirements for the role and even some of the preferred qualifications for the role. We do look for talent that meet both preferred and all the required. And those applicants typically are moved forward to the hiring leader. So make sure you look at both, not just the minimal requirements, to make sure that you are competitive as an applicant for that role.
And then one of the new features on our new job site is looking at your commute. A lot of times we see internal candidates pick one job title, and then they sprinkle their job application to 10, 15 sites. And really looking at the location of the position will really help show intent, instead of submitting numerous applications. San Diego is a very large county, and so to ensure that you have that work-life balance, your commute is a large part of that. So using the commute calculator on each of the job pages will allow you to understand how long it will take you to get to work each day.
Another factor to consider is your personal HR file. Do you currently have any recent corrective actions there that would be seen in the past year? If so, it may not be the best time to be applying for positions because you may not be the most qualified among all the applicants. It may be better to hold off on applying until there’s a demonstrated and consistent improved behavior in whatever that situation was.
Our talent advisors do look at the HR file when looking and considering to move candidates forward to the hiring leader. Corrective actions are in your HR file and active for one year. So if you do have any questions or not sure if it’s been a year, feel free to reach out to your HR operations team at your site. They’d be happy to answer any questions about what’s in your personal HR file.
And lastly, my last tip is to really let your leadership know that you are interested in other roles. They can really be your advocate. They work with you day in and day out and may be able to give you development opportunities within your department. It would give you insight on career growth or information about other departments that you may not have had otherwise. So use your manager and supervisor as a resource, and they could even reach out to a manager on your behalf and talk about your performance.
So as I promised, these videos are going to be short and sweet but give you a lot of useful information. I’d like to walk you through some of the key elements of how to maximize your Scripps education dollars with our financial assistance and scholarships in this quick five minute video tutorial. We will go through where to find this information online, how and where to apply, some helpful tips, some common reasons requests are denied, and how to contact us. Let’s get started.
First, let’s go to the main talent development page by going on ScrippsConnect. In the search bar, type in talent development. That will take you to all of the talent development resources and links to each category. For this tutorial, we will choose to click on the Financial Assistance and Scholarship link on the right side. Now that we are here on this page, we can explore the information here on tuition reimbursement as well as scholarship opportunities. Let’s scroll down on this page.
Here, you can see all of the scholarships available, who they are open to, and when to apply. Also frequently asked questions. Once an application period is open for an applicant, the link to the application will be live under the description. You will be able to apply using the link straight from this page. Learn more about each scholarship by clicking on the FAQs.
Please be sure to note the guidelines for applying. Let’s go over each one. Employees will only be eligible to win one scholarship from Scripps per fiscal year. Employees will not be eligible to win the same scholarship two years in a row. Please be sure to look carefully at the applications when they are open to ensure that you meet these requirements. The Connie Boyle and Larry Morgan Scholarship and Dorothy Kelly Nursing Scholarship can be awarded in addition to, and will not hinder eligibility for, any other Scripps scholarship due to philanthropic funding.
If you are going to school or thinking about going back, please be sure to utilize the tuition reimbursement program, which reimburses up to $1,500 for college courses and up to $1,000 for continuing education courses per calendar year. The combined reimbursement amount cannot exceed $1,500 per calendar year. Let’s go back to the financial assistance and scholarship page.
Now that we are here, you can see that there is an automated process for submitting a tuition reimbursement request. The portal is located on the right side. Also on this page is the policy in the FAQs. Let’s click on the Tuition Reimbursement Request so it can take us to the automated system.
You can log in by using your corporate ID number as the user name and your system-wide password as your password. Helpful tip. Sometimes you will have to enter this twice in order for the portal to recognize you. Once you are in, you can request a reimbursement, check your available balance, or view the status of your request by clicking on the View Reimbursement History link. We are going to walk through submitting a request.
Click on the Request for Reimbursement link. Please be sure to have all of your submission paperwork ready to upload in one complete document. Separate files will not be uploaded, and you will risk being declined, and we’ll have to start this process all over again. Please note that the cost of shipping and handling and tax is not covered. So please make sure that you subtract those expenses. Let’s scroll down.
Most of this form is auto-populated, but there are a few required fields that you will need to fill in. Be sure to use the dropdown arrow option for course type, and select either a college course or CE course. Let’s scroll down some more.
Here is where you will need to upload your requirement documentation. Again, please be sure to upload all required paperwork in one complete file. A Word document with screenshots will work just as fine as a scanned PDF.
Click on Select File. Search for the file you would like to upload and double-click. Click the Upload button. After your file is uploaded, it will indicate uploaded.
Please be sure then to check all of the boxes here, even if you did not request required textbooks. If you don’t check all of the boxes, you will not be able to submit. Once all of the boxes are checked, hit Submit.
Once you hit Submit, you will see a confirmation screen letting you know that you have successfully submitted a request. Your request will go to your manager for approval before it comes to talent development for final approval. The process normally takes two weeks, and you will receive an email from talent development if your request was declined or when it was sent to payroll, in which case the approved amount will appear on your pay stub.
Some common reasons why a request are denied are missing documentation. Please be sure to upload one complete file. The course was not a college course or a course that offered CEs. Remember, exams, recertification, license renewals, and other fees are not eligible.
If ACLS, PALS, or NRP certifications are required for an employee’s role, they may choose to take advantage of the Scripps benefit and take it at a Scripps at no charge or opt to pay out-of-pocket if they choose to take it outside of Scripps. These are not covered by tuition reimbursement if they are required for an employee’s role. Any cost associated with BLS is not covered by this program. If you have already reached your maximum CE reimbursement allotment of $1,000 or college course allotment of $1,500 for this calendar year, your request will be declined. And lastly, the request was not submitted within the three month grace period after course and date.

A great resource for tuition reduction if you are heading back to school is to check out our academic partnerships. Scripps makes it convenient by partnering with colleges, universities, and programs to offer discounted rates on a variety of learning opportunities for Scripps employees. And with some partners, their eligible dependents. First, let’s go to the main talent development page by going on Scripps Connect.
In the search bar, type in talent development. That will take you to all of the talent development resources and links to each category. For this tutorial, we will choose to click on the Academic Programs link on the right side. The list of university and college partnerships will be outlined. They include a brief overview of the programs that offer discounted rates, as well as a link to go directly to the school’s partnership page, where you can connect with a school advisor for more information.
You will want to reach out directly to the school for information on their programs. Simply click on the name of the school, and it will take you to their page. Here is an example of an academic partnership page from Capella University. Just want to make sure that you are aware that our academic partnership schools are different from those schools that have affiliation agreements with Scripps for clinical placements.
If you are looking to go back to school and will need a clinical placement, then you may want to check with student placements to see which schools Scripps already has established affiliation agreements with, and they may not necessarily be one of our academic partners that offers tuition discounts. CAMERON: My name’s Cameron, and I’m a nurse here at Scripps Mercy San Diego ER. Today, I was asked to share my experience with the transition program here at Scripps. And I’m going to have to say I’m a product of Scripps. So I did the new grad program, and then the transition program, and I’m currently finishing up precepting someone in the transition program.
And obviously, coming from the floors down to the ER, it’s a whole different world down here. It’s very fast paced, high acuity, think on your feet, you never know what’s coming through the doors type of thing. But that attracts a certain type of person, which then develops a certain type of culture. And honestly, the culture here at Scripps Mercy ER, it’s incredible. The staff here, we’re more like family than we are co-workers.
Obviously, the program itself, you’re guided through it the whole time. So you’re never on your own. You start out kind of small, and you slowly work your way up. And you always have resources everywhere, and the education’s constantly flowing to you, and you learn so much so fast. And next thing you know, you graduate the program, you’re on your own. But even when you’re on your own, the nursing down here, it’s team nursing, so you’re never on your own. You never stop learning. We have 20 ER nurses here that constantly tell me, you know, I learned something new today.
So obviously, I’m very happy with my choice to come down here to the ER. And if you think you have the attitude or the work ethic to be an emergency nurse, what are you waiting for? Do it.

A program that brings senior executives and front-line staff together for a series of open discussions. Employees get the opportunity to have meaningful conversations with Scripps president and other leaders about Scripps’ business strategy. Participants become ambassadors, sharing what they learn with their departments. Membership rotates every six months.
A six-month program, employee forums and ongoing alumni meetings to promote and enhance leadership skills, supervisor level engagement and foster a broader understanding of Scripps culture and business strategy. Alumni include supervisory employees who are the first line of formal leadership in their departments and at their location.
A one-year program designed to help leaders succeed at the highest levels of Scripps and accelerate culture change. Program incorporates Q&A forums, hands-on experience, access to top leadership and knowledge sharing.
I started working for Scripps in April of 2009 as a security officer at Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas. As a security officer my duties consisted of providing a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, employees, medical staff, and property. My role was to be a visible deterrent to criminal activity and actively patrol my assigned areas. It is also the responsibility of a security officer to ensures policies and procedures are carried out, report non-compliance, to respond to emergency situations, and when appropriate provide guidance for the safe management of the situation and communicating with leadership.
In October of 2009, I transitioned into the lead officer role. As a lead security Officer my duties were similar to the officer role. In addition, the Lead Security Officer monitors and arranges shift activities and post coverage according to schedule requirements and staff availability. This role also provides leadership, guidance, training, and orientation for new and current security officers.
In January 2017, I became the supervisor at Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego. My duties demonstrated a work style that was supportive of the security leadership team and reflected the mission, vision, and values of Scripps Health. I was responsible for oversight of the activities, functions of a department, providing functional expertise to staff and leadership, participating in hiring, overseeing daily productivity, creating staffing schedules, and ensuring policy and procedures were followed. I also responded to emergency situations and when appropriate providing guidance for the safe management of the situation.
In March 2020, my career progression continued into my current role as the manager for both Scripps Mercy San Diego and Mercy Chula Vista. I oversee daily security operations of all security for both campuses, ensuring that all established company policies and department standard operating procedures are carried out, and that emergencies are handled effectively. Responsibilities also include developing security policies and procedures necessary for protecting company assets against theft, adhering to safety regulations, conducting investigations, and implementing procedures to minimize risk of workplace violence, as well as assessing incidents to create strategies that will reduce the likelihood of future occurrences.
What is the day in a life of a Security Officer look like?
The day starts with shift pass-down and you can gauge what to expect during your time. It involves a lot of walking, as you are consistently patrolling the interior area of the hospital to the exterior perimeter of the hospital. You meet a lot of different personalities from patients, visitors, and staff.
What is the favorite part of your job when you were a security officer?
My favorite part of being an officer was the fact that every day was different and there was new experience with each scenario. It was a great learning opportunity to better understand the needs of both patients and clinical staff.
Would you recommend the security officer role to others?
I would recommend this role to those that are interested in wanting to help people, as well as to those that have interests within the scope of serving the community and safeguarding others. This role is somewhat like the field of law enforcement and clinical services combined. If you’re passionate about making others feel safe and want to make a difference, being in the security officer role is an extremely fulfilling and rewarding career. There is a great deal of support, as well as an opportunity for career progression.
After working for 18 months in the unit as a traveler, I knew it was my home and signed on in April of 2009.
I technically started at Scripps Mercy San Diego in the SICU in September of 2007 as a travel nurse from the Midwest. At the time, our unit was staffed largely by long term travel contracts.
My responsibilities in the ICU include bedside patient care, resource nurse, charge nurse, critical care outreach nurse and precepting new ICU RNs. As a critical care outreach nurse, I help assess and care for patients on the floor that either recently left the ICU or have worsening acuity that could require ICU care.
What does a day in the life of an ICU RN look like?
Fast-paced and challenging. Caring for critically ill COVID-19 patients has only heightened that. The patient-to-nurse ratio in the ICU is typically two patients to one nurse due to the high acuity and frequent interventions required. Critical care nursing depends on constant critical thinking and proactive interventions to improve patient outcomes. Our 12 1/2-hour shift is spent on focused assessments, weaning and titration of IV medications, and specialty intervention, including intracranial monitoring, advanced cardiac monitoring, and mechanical ventilation.
What is your favorite part of your job?
This one is easy. My favorite part of my job is my Scripps Mercy ICU family. I work with the most amazing group of people! Teamwork is also a cornerstone of critical care nursing and the reason why we provide such excellent patient care is our incredible team at Mercy San Diego. Many of our nurses have been here for 10+, 20+, even 30+ years!! We are a family and support each other both inside and outside the hospital.
Would you recommend this role to others?
I would absolutely recommend a career in nursing to others who are compassionate, empathetic and driven to learn. Nursing offers an incredibly rewarding career with continuous learning. It’s also a great career for work/family/life balance.

For about a year and a half, I moved into Health Information for Green Hospital as a SuperUser during Wave 1 of the Epic GoLive.
My first 5 years at Scripps, I was part of the Business Apps team as an Analyst II. I supported billing applications and the hospital’s main EMR at the time – Horizon Patient Folder AKA “HPF.” I also supported HDM, CAC, QuadraMed, Softmed, FormFast, and Morrisey MSO.
I then moved into the Epic Credentialed Trainer role, teaching and providing GoLive support for the Grand Central application and its users. In late 2018, I volunteered for a newly created team of Epic CT’s. This new role has allowed me to also get credentialed in Ambulatory Providers and IP Orders. I’ve really found a wonderful role where my background has proven to be beneficial to the company and personally rewarding.
What does a day in the life of a Credentialed Trainer look like?
We have 24/7 support ready to assist all those who call into the Epic Service Desk line (Option 1). Our ServiceDesk CT team is a cohesive group of individuals, each with an emphasis on different Epic modules and backgrounds that really balance out our support of our end user community. We are extremely proud of the work and assistance we provide to our front-line staff, as well as all those we assist in remote roles.
What is your favorite part of your job?
I’m truly blessed to be part of an awesome team. The Epic Service Desk team didn’t exist until Wave 3 of the Epic implementation had completed. I am the only original member of that group. It’s really an honor to support our end user community, especially during these unprecedented times.
Would you recommend this role to others?
I would totally recommend this role to others! In previous roles, I never had this much exposure to various departments. I support everything from transport, EVS, outpatient and inpatient staff, as well as our remote sites and end users. This role really gives you great exposure to a bit of everything. You get a better vision and understanding of the overall workings of Epic.
I have had a hybrid position for about 3 years, which means I am a Medical Assistant / check out.
What does a day in the life of a Medical Assistant look like?
The role of a Medical Assistant is a role of many hats. I help with getting clinics ready for the day. I stock rooms, clean, get patients to rooms, and start the note for the doctor. I can take off any dressing that the patient may have. Once the doctor has seen the patient, I’ll finish up with taking sutures out and putting proper dressing back on. Finally, I make follow-up appointments and then on to the next patient.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is helping patients with anything they need, whether that’s making them feel less scared or nervous or making appointments for them.
Would you recommend this role to others?
Yes, I would recommend this role to others. Especially if you like taking care of people and working for and with great people. I have never been so happy to go to work.

I have been a PSR since I started working for Scripps in December 2013. I schedule patients, check in, prepare charts, answer phones, process CD image requests, enter orders, create and edit templates for the different modalities in Radiology, and I create the monthly schedules for all PSRs in the Radiology Dept.
What does a day in the life of a Patient Service Representative look like?
We come in and wipe everything down. We want to make sure everything is ready and sanitized when the front doors open and our patients come in. We greet our patients and check them in. Answer phones, schedule and reschedule appointments, prepare charts, mail out CD requests for X-rays, etc.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is helping our patients. Sometimes they just need a little patience and understanding. Many of our patients are not feeling well or are in pain when they come in for a visit. I feel you need to be compassionate to work in this position.
For instance, my mom can be a difficult patient at times, so I usually take her to all of her appointments. I always think about this when I have a difficult patient. They should be treated the way you want other people to treat your parents or family members.
Would you recommend this role to others?
Yes, I would recommend this role to others. I have been given many responsibilities, but I enjoy them all. I am always busy, and my days go by quickly. The techs are all very helpful and try to work with the PSRs to help things run smoothly. I really enjoy working in this department. I have enjoyed it so much that I am now looking into furthering my education in radiology. I will be attending school for Radiology Tech/Sonographer.

What does a day in the life of a Sterile Processing Tech look like?
My days start with making rounds and checking the surgery schedule for the evening and next day. I connect with my supervisor to go over the day’s events. Then I prioritize the workload with my staff for the next day’s cases.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is the service to our patients. I believe this position requires a calling and a love for helping others. Working closely with the operating room is also an exciting and rewarding part of the position.
