  • Scripps La Jolla was named among the top 100 hospitals in the nation by IBM Watson Health for the fourth consecutive year.

  • For the eighth time in a row, Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla has received an “A” grade from The Leapfrog Group in its twice-a-year Hospital Safety Grades report. Scripps La Jolla is the only hospital in San Diego County to have a record of straight “As” from Leapfrog for safety.
  • U.S. News & World Report ranked the combined programs of Scripps Green Hospital and Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla No. 1 in the San Diego region, No. 6 in California and among the best in the nation in eight specialties – Gynecology (No. 10), Diabetes and Endocrinology (No. 14), Pulmonology (No. 15), Cardiology and Heart Surgery (No. 21), Gastroenterology and GI Surgery (No. 25), Orthopedics (No. 34), Geriatrics (No. 36) and Nephrology (No. 39) – in their annual Best Hospitals list.
  • U.S. News & World Report designated the combined programs of Scripps Green Hospital and Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla as High Performing in cancer, neurology and neurosurgery, rheumatology and urology, and Scripps Mercy Hospital, San Diego as High Performing in nephrology.
  • U.S. News & World Report designated the combined programs of Scripps Green Hospital and Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla as High Performing in all nine categories of common adult procedures and conditions – abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, colon cancer surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hip replacement, knee replacement and lung cancer surgery – and Scripps Mercy Hospital, San Diego as High Performing in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
  • The California Association of Physician Groups (CAPG) awarded Scripps Clinic, Scripps Coastal Medical Center and Scripps Affiliated Medical Group with the CAPG ELITE Award for Standards Excellence.
  • Truven Health Analytics named Scripps Health among the top five large health systems in the nation. Scripps was the only California health care system on the Truven Top 15 Health Systems list this year. This is the fifth time Scripps has received the honor.
  • Becker’s Hospital Review named Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla one of the 100 Great Hospitals in America for the fourth consecutive year in its list of innovative health care centers that provide high-quality patient care.
  • Truven Health Analytics named Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla among the top 100 hospitals in the nation. The 24th annual 100 Top Hospitals® list identified the best hospitals in the United States based on their overall organizational performance, including patient clinical care measures and business efficiency.

  • For the 10th year in a row, Fortune magazine ranked Scripps Health among the top employers in the nation in their 20th annual list of the 100 Best Companies to Work for. Scripps, ranked No. 45, was the only San Diego-based company on the list in 2017.
  • Working Mother magazine recognized Scripps Health as one of the 2017 Working Mother 100 Best Companies for outstanding leadership in family benefits and paid leave that supports working moms. Scripps is the only San Diego-based organization on the list.

Leadership

  • Catherine Frenette, MD, medical director of the liver transplantation program at Scripps Green Hospital, has been named Physician of the Year by the American Liver Foundation’s Pacific Coast Division, which includes San Diego and Imperial counties.
  • Scripps Health President and CEO Chris Van Gorder was named No. 62 on Modern Healthcare’s annual ranking of the nation’s 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare. This is the ninth time that Van Gorder landed on this prestigious list.
  • Hubert Greenway, MD, chairman of Mohs and dermatology surgery at Scripps Clinic received the Frederic E. Mohs Award from the American College of Mohs Surgery at the college’s annual meeting in San Francisco on April 28, 2017.
  • Daniel Einhorn, MD, a medical director of the Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute, was named Outstanding Clinical Practitioner by the Endocrine Society, the largest international organization representing professionals in the field of endocrinology.

  • U.S. News & World Report ranked seven Scripps Health specialties — among the top 50 programs of their kind in the nation — cardiology and heart surgery, gynecology, diabetes and endocrinology, pulmonology, orthopedics, gastroenterology and GI surgery and geriatrics.
  • Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla and Scripps Green Hospital were the only two medical facilities in San Diego County to receive a five-star rating quality from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
  • The Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation certified the Scripps Clinic Viterbi Family Sleep Medicine Clinic as a restless legs syndrome (RLS) Quality Care Center, a designation recognizing the clinic’s expertise and leadership in diagnosing and treating the neurological disorder.
  • Truven Health Analytics named Scripps Health among the 15 top health systems in the nation. This is Scripps’ fourth appearance on the Top 15 Health Care Systems list. Scripps is the only health care system in Southern California to make the list this year.
  • Truven Health named Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla among the top 100 hospitals in the nation. The 23rd annual 100 Top Hospitals list released by Truven identified the best hospitals in the United States based on their overall organizational performance, including patient clinical care measures and business efficiency.
  • Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla was the only hospital in California rated above average for outcomes in coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) with a valve replacement or repair, based on a report by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD).
  • Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, Scripps Green Hospital and Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas each were recognized as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in the United States.The Scripps hospitals were recognized as part of The Joint Commission’s 2015 annual report, “America’s Hospitals: Improving Quality and Safety,” for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care and stroke. Additionally, Scripps La Jolla and Scripps Encinitas were recognized for excellence in perinatal care, and Scripps Green was recognized for excellence in immunization.
  • Scripps Green Hospital was named one of the 50 top cardiovascular hospitals in the United States by Truven Health Analytics for the seventh time.
  • Becker’s Hospital Review recognized Scripps Health as one of the best heart care providers in the nation in the publication’s annual “100 Hospitals with Great Heart Programs” list. Scripps was among 10 health systems in California included in the list.
  • Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla received Magnet recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), a designation that represents the “gold standard” for nursing excellence.

  • Working Mother magazine recognized Scripps Health as one of the 2016 Working Mother 100 Best Companies for outstanding leadership in establishing policies and creating programs that support working moms. Scripps is the only San Diego-based organization on the list.
  • Fortune ranked Scripps No. 16 in the magazine’s annual 100 Best Workplaces for Women list.
  • Scripps Health’s five hospital campuses were each recognized as a “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality” in the Healthcare Equality Index 2016, an annual survey conducted by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) organization.
  • For the ninth consecutive year, Scripps Health was named among the top employers in the nation by Fortune magazine. Fortune’s 19th annual list of America’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” ranked Scripps at No. 42. Scripps was the only San Diego-based company on the list in 2016.
  • The National Association for Female Executives named Scripps Health one of the nation’s “Top 10 Nonprofit Companies for Executive Women” for 2016.
  • Fortune magazine and Great Place to Work selected Scripps Health among the nation’s 50 Best Workplaces for Diversity, and Fortune magazine and People en Español named Scripps one of the 10 Best Workplaces for Hispanics and Latinos. Scripps was the only San Diego-based organization selected to these lists. Scripps ranked No. 29 among the Best Workplaces for Diversity and No. 7 among the Best Workplaces for Hispanics and Latinos.

Leadership

  • Scripps Health President and CEO Chris Van Gorder was named No. 74 on Modern Healthcare’s annual ranking of the nation’s 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare. This is the eight time that Van Gorder landed on this prestigious list.
  • Sonya Christianson, MD, director of inpatient palliative care at Scripps Health, and Kimberly Bower, MD, medical director of the pediatric hospice program operated jointly by Scripps and Rady Children’s Hospital, each earned a fellow designation from the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
  • The American Cancer Society elected Ujwala Rajgopal, MD, a longtime surgeon with Scripps Health, as 2016 chairman of the California Division.
  • Scripps Mercy surgeon Paul Goldfarb, MD, a longtime oncologic surgeon with Scripps Health, was elected to a three-year term as a member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Commission on Cancer (CoC).
  • Scripps Health’s Paul Teirstein, MD, a world-renowned interventional cardiologist, received the 2015 Geoffrey O. Hartzler Master Clinical Operator Award from the Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF) during a ceremony at the group’s 27th annual scientific symposium Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT).

  • S&P Global Ratings affirmed Scripps Health’s AA rating and stable outlook, citing consistently strong operating performance, which it noted it expected to continue despite industry challenges.
  • Moody’s Investors Services affirmed Scripps Health’s Aa3 rating and stable outlook, acknowledging Scripps’ strong management practices and focus on transformation.
  • Fitch Ratings affirmed Scripps Health’s AA rating and stable outlook, citing its strong financial performance in a competitive market.

  • Truven Health Analytics named Scripps Health among 15 top health systems in the nation.

  • The Scripps Translational Science Institute received $4.4 million as part of the National Institutes of Health initiative called Big Data to Knowledge.

Among our most popular events of the year, we give our honored employees the “red carpet” treatment.
