A Diverse Team

San Diego County is incredibly diverse. More than half of the county’s 3.3 million residents are from ethnic minority groups, and nearly a quarter of them were born outside of the country. As a result, our community is a vibrant, culturally rich place to live and work. Our patient population reflects this diversity and so does our workforce.

  • Scripps Health is ranked among the nation’s 100 Best Workplaces for Diversity by Fortune magazine and Great Place to Work – the only San Diego-based company to make the list.
  • We demonstrate complete respect for the rights of every individual. We honor the dignity of all persons demonstrated by our actions towards one another and those we serve. We respect and honor the cultural, ethnic and religious beliefs and practices of all populations.
  • People of color make up 57% of all our employees, 53% of all leadership, and 10% of our executives.
  • Women make up 75% of all our employees, 73% of all leadership, and 38% of our executives.

Living our Values

Quality

We provide the highest quality of service.

Respect

We demonstrate complete respect for the rights of every individual.

Efficiency

We care for our patients every day in a responsible and efficient manner.

A Culture of Excellence

698

804

Last year, 698 employees received promotions.

Last year, 804 employees transferred laterally from one position to another throughout the system, based on where they wanted to work and what they wanted to do.

Creating and maintaining a culture of excellence requires that we help all our people learn and grow. Scripps invests heavily in employee development so we can ensure both rewarding careers for our people and exceptional care for our patients. Ultimately, our engaged, talented employees create innovative solutions to workflow challenges, own their development and have opportunities to grow through job promotion or by moving laterally.

Listening to Each Other

“Don’t just invite employees to tell you what’s on their minds – make changes based on what you hear, so you can improve their environment.”

– Chris Van Gorder, President and CEO

At Scripps, listening is fundamental to who we are. If we don’t listen well, we can’t serve our patients or truly live our values. For our team, listening is not merely hearing. It’s not a matter of collecting information from others and then moving on. Our leaders believe listening is an opportunity to learn from employees, build relationships and earn trust.

We want to ensure our people have a voice so they can optimize their workflow. We start by listening and we always follow with concrete plans. A few ways we’re listening to our team:

  • Annual employee engagement survey
  • System-wide and site-based employee forums
  • Leadership development programs
  • Peer-to-peer recognition

Work-Life Perks

Our work-life services team coordinates a variety of popular events that bring our staff and families from across San Diego together for some well-deserved fun. Some of our events include advance-screening movie nights, Broadway shows, ballet nights, hockey games, NASCAR races, music festivals and many more.

  • Movie Nights: Since the introduction of Scripps Movie Nights and Scripps Movie Matinees in 2012, we’ve distributed more than 84,000 tickets to employees, family members and friends.
  • Scripps Studio Art Exhibits: Held at various hospital and clinic sites, each showcases the art and music of our talented staff.
  • Scripps Night at the Ballpark: The annual event, coordinated by a committee of employees, has been a home run since 2003 and is one of the most popular Scripps celebrations.
