Work-Life
and Culture
Life at Scripps is about caring for people as whole individuals.
San Diego County is incredibly diverse. More than half of the county’s 3.3 million residents are from ethnic minority groups, and nearly a quarter of them were born outside of the country. As a result, our community is a vibrant, culturally rich place to live and work. Our patient population reflects this diversity and so does our workforce.
We provide the highest quality of service.
We demonstrate complete respect for the rights of every individual.
We care for our patients every day in a responsible and efficient manner.
Last year, 698 employees received promotions.
Last year, 804 employees transferred laterally from one position to another throughout the system, based on where they wanted to work and what they wanted to do.
Creating and maintaining a culture of excellence requires that we help all our people learn and grow. Scripps invests heavily in employee development so we can ensure both rewarding careers for our people and exceptional care for our patients. Ultimately, our engaged, talented employees create innovative solutions to workflow challenges, own their development and have opportunities to grow through job promotion or by moving laterally.
“Don’t just invite employees to tell you what’s on their minds – make changes based on what you hear, so you can improve their environment.”
– Chris Van Gorder, President and CEO
At Scripps, listening is fundamental to who we are. If we don’t listen well, we can’t serve our patients or truly live our values. For our team, listening is not merely hearing. It’s not a matter of collecting information from others and then moving on. Our leaders believe listening is an opportunity to learn from employees, build relationships and earn trust.
We want to ensure our people have a voice so they can optimize their workflow. We start by listening and we always follow with concrete plans. A few ways we’re listening to our team:
Our work-life services team coordinates a variety of popular events that bring our staff and families from across San Diego together for some well-deserved fun. Some of our events include advance-screening movie nights, Broadway shows, ballet nights, hockey games, NASCAR races, music festivals and many more.
