Our rich history dates back more than a century. Scripps Mercy Hospital was founded in 1890 by Mother Mary Michael Cummings and Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla was founded in 1924 by Ellen Browning Scripps. Driven by their compassion and pioneering spirit, these strong women set out to meet the healthcare needs of a growing San Diego community. Today, their legacy lives on in the thousands of Scripps employees and physicians who provide and support excellent care and make our community a healthier place to live. Working together, we proudly carry our tradition of excellence forward for the patients we serve.
  • We treat one-quarter of the approximately 3.3 million people who live in San Diego County.
  • We provide excellent patient care within our five hospital campuses, 30 outpatient centers, 13 walk-in clinics, 4 emergency rooms, 3 urgent care centers, and hundreds of affiliated physicians’ offices.
