At Scripps, we are committed to nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals through our comprehensive student placement program. Student Placements handles all clinical placements at Scripps Health outside of medical education. To be placed at Scripps, a current affiliation agreement with the school program is required. Student Placements is the point of contact for questions about affiliation agreements, placement requests, clearance, and student access.

Student Placement Process:

  • Step 1: Affiliation Agreement with Scripps Health – If your school does not have an affiliation agreement, please contact us to explore the possibility of establishing one. Establishing an agreement takes 6-8 weeks. Please factor in this timeframe and your anticipated placement start date before inquiring. If an agreement is already in place, proceed to Step 2.
  • Step 2: Submit a Student Placement Request via your Complio account through American DataBank.
    • Student placement requests are reviewed on a semester by semester basis.
    • All requests must be made using the Complio service by American DataBank. Partner schools are required to maintain a Complio account. Contacting potential preceptors and managers for placements is NOT permitted for undergraduate placements.
    • Request Process:
      • Your school submits a placement request via Complio.
      • Once the placement request is entered the status of the request will be “Pending”.
      • Scripps Student Placements will review the request and contact the requested site and department for final determination.
      • If the request is approved, Scripps Student Placements will update the request’s status to “Approved”, and an email notification will be sent to the school from Complio.
  • Step 3: Submit Student Placement Clearance Requirements in Complio
    • Clearance requirements must be completed at least three weeks prior to the students start date. Scripps uses Complio to manage and track these requirements. All students, even if the students are employees of Scripps Health, are required to complete and submit all requirements in Complio.
    • Instructors of nursing and respiratory therapy rotations at Scripps sites must also complete the Complio clearance process.

*Note to Students enrolled in graduate-level programs

  • The majority of graduate level students seeking clinical experience at Scripps are required to identify their own preceptor prior to submitting a formal request for placement. If you are unsure of your program’s requirements in this regard, please contact Student Placements for additional details.

Everett W.

High School Explorer Intern

“From this experience, I gained a greater understanding about how the disciplines function in a hospital setting. By shadowing five departments, I talked with a myriad of people who offered me various perspectives on healthcare professions, which helped single out the career I currently want to pursue.”

Noah L.

RN ICU

“As a new graduate RN going directly into ICU, the Scripps ICU Transition Program provided thorough and user-friendly education and instruction that made me feel more comfortable and knowledgeable about critical care concepts. The support from my in-unit preceptors, in addition to the transition program educators, was vital in ensuring I constantly had resources to reach out to who were always pleased to answer questions. This led to a seamless gradual growth that empowered me to manage patient assignments on my own and utilize my resources when questions inevitably arose.”

ICU RN, Noah L.
