Job Description

Under the general direction of the WIC Program Manager and direct supervision of the WIC Program Supervisor the Registered Dietician is responsible for a local agency WIC subunit e.g. South Bay City Heights and or Downtown Central providing the coordination of daily WIC client intake and registration nutrition education and counseling and food voucher distribution. Provides direction technical and professional guidance to the support staff therein e.g. WIC Nutrition Care Technicians and WIC Customer Service Specialists. Determines initial and continued WIC eligibility and provides nutrition care service as directed by the local agency annual Nutrition Services Plan to perinatal women and the parents legal guardians caregivers of newborn to preschool age children predominantly those identified as high risk in accordance with the policies and practices outlined in the WIC Program Manual.

Job Requirements


Experience/Specialized Skills:  Basic knowledge of breastfeeding benefits, physiology and procedures; organization and function of public health and economics assistance systems; health promotion;  and disease prevention.
Considerable knowledge of normal, therapeutic and community nutrition; and effective interpersonal communication and counseling techniques.
 
Ability to work independently with general guidance; assess, plan, implement and evaluate clinic activities; use creativity and independent judgment; identify resources of information; network with professionals inside and outside of the WIC Program; positively represent the WIC Program and its interests; communicate clearly and effectively with WIC Nutrition Program Manager, other staff, WIC clients and a wide variety of community contacts in both written and verbal form; present a professional image to clients, the public and staff; exercise patience and tact while interacting with clients, the public and staff; use a variety of audiovisual equipment; operate an IBM-compatible computer and common application programs; and type at least 40 words per  minute. 
 
 
Required Education/Course(s)/Training:  Baccalaureate Degree in Food and Nutrition Services, Nutrition Sciences or Dietetics from an accredited college or university.  Completion of a dietetic internship or other training program which has been approved by the American Dietetic Association.
 
Required Certification/Registration:  Registered Dietitian credentialed with or eligible for registration by the Commission on dietetic Registration (probation will continue until registered status is documented), and expected to maintain such status with appropriate continuing education. 
 
Preferred Skills/Experience: One to two years as a dietitian in community nutrition, public health or WIC Program desired.  Bilingual, (English/Spanish), desired.
