Job Description

Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, the pharmacy technician obtains medication histories in an accurate, professional and efficient manner for patients newly admitted to the hospital while in the Emergency Department. May include, but not limited to contacting community pharmacies, outpatient providers, and patient family members to obtain needed medication information and coordinate care.
The specialty technician will perform complex, specialized duties regarding automated dispensing machines, robotics, repackaging devices and/or are assigned leadership roles in departmental projects and programs. May periodically be responsible for performing basic pharmacy technician duties and more advanced pharmacy technician duties that may include billing and/or IV Clean Room responsibilities based on site specific needs. Works under the supervision of registered pharmacists.

Job Requirements

Experience/Specialized Skills: High school diploma or equivalent. Graduate of Pharmacy Technician Career Program. 2 Years of retail pharmacy experience. Good organizational, problem solving and computer skills. written and verbal communication skills for interfacing with all levels of staff, physicians, patients and other contacts. Willingness or ability to learn electronic health record management and Pyxis medication cabinet essential functions. Understands commonly used medical terminology and abbreviations. Able to interpret physician orders including directions for use, commonly used abbreviations and symbols, number of dosage units, strength and systems of measurement, route of administration, dosage forms, and frequency of administration.

Required Certification/Registration: California Board of Pharmacy Certification. Certification by a National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board required.
