General Description
The Scripps HealthExpress Clinics will provide same day access for patients either through appointments or on a walk-in basis for acute care of a defined set of minor medical conditions.  The clinics are intended to provide additional access point for our patients seeking care for non-chronic issues and will not replace the Primary Care Physicians or existing Urgent Care Clinics.
The Scripps HealthExpress Clinic’s Advanced Practice Clinician Supervisor works autonomously within a medical office building, providing first line acute care for minor conditions under the supervision of a remotely-based physician supervisor.  Clinically, the APC Supervisor works to ensure prompt and convenient access for scheduled and walk-in patients, strives to ensure successful growth of the practice, and provides excellent representation of Scripps in all professional aspects. When necessary, the APC Supervisor facilitates transfer to a higher level of care to the patient’s primary care provider/care team, specialty, and/or urgent care/emergency room.  Patient care may be delivered in-person, electronically, or telephonically.
The APC Supervisor is expected to meet the highest standards for clinical capability, competence, professional education, quality improvement, and overall excellence in patient care delivery. The position requires a current California Nurse Practitioner license and DEA furnishing certificate.
In addition, the APC Supervisor will also have administrative responsibilities to assist the Clinical Directors in the management of the Scripps HealthExpress.
Key Clinical Responsibilities
  • Provides medical care for common acute conditions, including but not limited to:
    • Minor infections, including those involving the respiratory, genitourinary, dermatologic, ocular, and gastrointestinal systems
    • Musculoskeletal complaints and minor injuries
    • Asthma, allergy
    • Provides immunizations as required
    • Recognizes limits of care and discusses cases with supervisor appropriately
    • Is adept at POC testing (Point of care)
  • Able to diagnose and treat patients from age 3 months and older
Key Administrative Responsibilities
  • In conjunction with the Clinical Directors, ensures all sites provide patient care in accordance with Scripps HealthExpress standards
  • Reports to Clinical Directors on weekly, more frequently if needed, regarding:
    • APC interactions with staff or patients
    • Clinical aptitude
    • APC adherence to clinical protocols and workflows
  • Under supervision of the Clinical Directors, develops and implements policies and regulations
  • Reviews daily and monthly metrics for all sites as defined by Scripps HealthExpress
  • Works with operational team to ensure a smooth operation of clinic services at all sites
  • Demonstrates compassionate leadership in a well-balanced manner
  • Create and maintain APC schedules for all sites two months in advance
  • Track shifts worked by each APC in the HealthExpress Clinics, and submit these reports to the Scripps Medical Foundation Finance Department based on Payroll department requirements
  • Lead the training, support, and mentoring of HealthExpress APCs with special attention to initial orientation and shadowing process
  • Support recruitment of Scripps HealthExpress APCs
  • Assist the Clinical Directors in APC performance reviews
  • Has proven leadership skills and is able to lead compassionately
  • Has excellent clinical judgement & demonstrated competence in acute care delivery
  • Adheres to the latest evidence-based clinical standards
  • Has special interest in the establishment and growth of increased health access points for patient care
  • Is comfortable with independent practice with at least 2 years of clinical experience.
  • Has flexibility in schedule and duties, to include “on call” scheduling
  • Is proficient in use of electronic medical records (EPIC or equivalent EMR)
  • Interest in process improvement
  • Is committed to professional self-improvement and continuing education
  • Works well in a team setting
  • Is certified in BLS
  • Supports all of the institution’s mission and goals
  • Is willing and capable of completing daily checks for quality control of meds, test and equipment
Up to 70% of time devoted to administrative activities based on the needs of the HealthExpress Clinic and approved by Clinical Director.
